Sample speech introductions

Below are introductions to two speeches. For each one, write seven words on a palm card as prompts for what is said. The seven words in blue (or bold when printed) in Introduction 1 are suggestions. The words you write on your palm cards do not have to occur in the speech.

Introduction 1: Bush survival

Do you remember the last time you went for a walk in the bush? I hope you were better prepared for your bushwalk than my family was last summer.

If I told you my father set off in thongs, would you be shocked? Doesn't he know Australia has the top ten most deadly snakes in the world! If I also told you none of us took drinking water, you'd be convinced my family needed an urgent lesson in basic bush survival skills.

Every year millions of Australians go bushwalking and every year there are thousands of calls to emergency services or visits to medical centres because walkers just don't follow some simple bushwalking rules. Think for a moment. What do you need to do to go safely into our bush? I've learnt it comes down to five simple rules.

Introduction 2: Vote 1

It's great to be able to speak to you about the student representative council elections and about the type of SRC that we need, the type of SRC that I want to be part of. At next week's student council elections, I urge you: vote for me to make changes happen! Vote for me if you want to make your voice heard!

Let me explain. We all know the student representative council has been pretty ineffective for the past year or so. And I believe that's because we don't have determined students, like myself, representing us. If we are going to convince the principal to build our skate ramp, we need a student council that will stand up and fight for it. We need strong student representatives who will work together to build a strong student council. I believe I can fill that role. You all know me because we've been classmates for years. You know me for my honesty, my courage and above all my passion.
